Fighting Mold Naturally with 5 Essential Oils
Essential Oils and Mold
The potency of pure essential oils reveals a non-toxic and natural method of fighting mold. Mold growth and exposure may be inhibited with these natural plant compounds. There are numerous studies showing the effectiveness of certain essential oils assisting in mold and fungus issues, as well as supporting immune function to aid in recovery from toxic mold exposure.
The oils listed below are some of the most useful oils in dealing with mold. Always remember that to successfully prevent mold from returning, any leaks or humidity issues must be resolved. Mold on porous material, such as drywall, must be cut out and replaced. Please consider hiring a professional mold remediator to remove mold, especially if the area affected is greater than 10 square feet and if anyone living in the residence has a compromised immune system or health concerns.
Amazing results
In 2005, Edward Close, PhD—a mold remediation consultant with 30 years experience in the environmental industry—was asked to do sampling for mold in an apartment complex that had been flooded, evacuated, and later put up for sale.
After much urging by his wife, he diffused essential oil in the apartments for a 24-hour period.
The research project yielded astonishing results!
And two weeks later they were even more astonishing!
Here is the video that tells all:
5 Essential Oils to Treat Mold
Oregano
Oregano essential oil is one of the most potent essential oils. This oil has been used for centuries for cleansing and immune-enhancing benefits. Oregano essential oil, along with cinnamon, thyme, and cumin oils inhibited the production of aflatoxin by aspergillus fungus. Oregano oil is a wonderful purifying agent and immune booster.
Thyme
Thyme Essential Oil is one of the primary essential oil suggested for mold (after Melaleuca). Thyme has also been used for a lot of toxic problems, from Candida to Mold infections.
Thyme is efficacious against T.viride, P.chrvsogenuin, and A. niger by dip treatment on SYP. Thyme oil diluted (1 part of essential oil, 4 parts of water) provided protection from mold growth for at least 20 weeks, but longer efficacy is anticipated…
Another basic formulation to eradicate mold is a solution of 4 ounces of Thyme essential oil mixed with one gallon of water. The mixture is sprayed, with a diffuser, into a room or a dwelling. The solution is misted over all surfaces. AC outlet vents are similarly sprayed. The AC inlet vent is also sprayed when the AC is turned ON. Preferably, the dwelling is tented and a small positive air pressure is maintained in the dwelling for 24 hours. The treatment is repeated with an enhanced solution of 4 oz. of essential oil mixed with one gallon of water.
An additional recipe is made with 50% of thyme essential oil and the remaining 50% is equal parts of the essential oils of: cajeput, cedarwood, citronella, clove, cypress, fir-needle, eucalyptus, garlic, lavender, lemon, lemongrass, marjoram, niaouli, onion, orange, oregano, patchouli, peppermint, rosemary, rosewood, tea tree, y-lang, and vetivert.
Spray the mix in the moldy surface.

Cinnamon

This essential oil contains strong cleansing and immune enhancing properties as well.
Clove
Clove essential oil is great for dealing with fungal growth.
Another iron chelator, clove essential oil is arguably the most potent antioxidant on the planet. (25) Known detoxifying agents, researchers are discovering just how powerful antioxidants are and how important they are for health.
Cloves are derived from an evergreen tree native to Indonesia. The flower buds are often used as a spice. The essential oil of clove has been used medicinally in Chinese and Indian medicine and herbalism as a painkiller for dentistry.
The National Institute on Aging developed a way for us to quantify antioxidant capability in the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) system of measurement. Within the ORAC system, cloves come in as one of the highest valued antioxidants, towering over sorghum, the next on the list, by a difference of more than 50,000. (26) As a concentrated essential oil, there is simply no comparison.
The famous Aspergillus niger (also known as black mold) is especially sensitive to clove oil. This suggests promising effectiveness in cleaning molds on hard (non-porous) surfaces.
Cloves have been shown to put an end to Candida growth in the mouth and intestine. A study found that clove “had a fast killing effect on yeast cells.”
Application: Premake an antioxidant, essential oil detox blend with cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, lemon, orange, and rosemary. Add 1 drop of the blended oil in some honey and coconut oil for during your next cleanse!
Remember: Clove is a powerful antioxidant that can help ward off free radicals and maintain a healthy immune system.
Tea Tree
Think of tea tree Essential Oil as mold kryptonite.
If you have mold in your house tea tree essential oil is by far the most effective and natural option. It can also be an effective source for naturally treating small mold issues on surfaces and fabrics. If you need to kill mold or mildew on your clothing, or to eliminate a musty odor, simply add a few drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil to the wash cycle.
That will also help kill mildew buildup in the washer and can be used to rinse and refresh clothing that was left in the machine too long.
Tea Tree is more expensive than other alternatives, but when you have mold, bargaining is not the way to go.
You may also know Tea Tree by its other name: Melaleuca. But Tea Tree and Melaleuca are exactly the same essential oil.
Note: Tea tree oil is absolutely safe for adults. However, it can be toxic to small children and pets (especially cats & dogs) in high doses. If you have kiddoes in the house, be sure to store your Tea Tree Essential Oil bottle in a safe place. Melaleuca is also gentle on the skin, so it can also be used topically, especially when teens hit puberty.
Melaleuca is a very powerful anti-fungal essential oil and it’s often used as a non-toxic cleaning solution. It also has anti-microbial properties and is especially the best oil to get rid of mold and mildew.

How to use tea tree
If you have a small mold area to clean you can mix 1 tsp tea tree oil with 1 cup of water and put in a spray bottle. Once you have determined that the mold contamination is safe to clean yourself, you can spray this formula on the problem area, let it soak for a while, and then carefully wipe clean. If you are cleaning a porous surface you may not want to dilute with water as this may feed the mold growth. Test a small area to make sure it does not damage the item. This should kill most spores and prevent the mold from returning. If you have a water issue or leak, you will want to make sure to get it fixed so that you do not have the same issue return.
If you have a lot of mold and need to spray more than one cup of water, make sure you also add some extra drops of oil Or the teaspoon).
When you spray Melaleuca Essential Oil on a moldy area, keep kids and pets away from the area until you remove it entirely.
Before using it, vigorously shake your spray bottle to finish mixing the blend. Once you’ve mixed it, you can store it for later use. (the shelf life of Tea Tree is very long).
Spray your Melaleuca mix directly onto the mold and let it sit overnight.
Because it’s a natural Essential Oil, it’s safe to leave it on the affected surface.
Note: Tea Tree oil does have a strong, pine smell, but it will dissipate within a day or two.
The following day, the mold should be dead.
Next, dip a rag in vinegar and scrub the remnants away until the area is completely clean. Dead mold can sometimes be tough to remove, so don’t be afraid to put in a little elbow grease!
Note: Once done, always dispose of the rag immediately or wash it in very hot water. This will prevent mold spores from multiplying elsewhere.
Tea Tree/Melaleuca essential oil is a powerful natural anti-fungal that is often used in non-toxic cleaning solutions and can also be beneficial in dealing with mold and mildew smells.
Please use caution when handling as many of these Essential Oils are skin irritants and should always be diluted and handled with care. Do not get them near your eyes, do not swallow.
